Launching torpedoes
Actually, we made two rule mistakes. the other was believing I couldn't HET on subpulse 1 and bring a fresh shield and fresh ph-G to bear on the torps.
On the HET... for those not in the know (which was me before today) .... you pay for the HET at the start of the subpulse before anyone moves and do the HET according to order of preference (slower ships before faster ships, etc.). If you decide against doing the HET you still lose the energy.

Yep, always remember and never forget, you can HET on ANY subpulse whether you get to move on that subpulse or not. This said, it is easy to forget this in the heat of battle and the one risk-free HET is a precious thing to spend. Then again, if it will be life or death for your ship, one might even want to risk a non-risk-free HET if it could save the ship.On the HET... for those not in the know (which was me before today) .... you pay for the HET at the start of the subpulse before anyone moves and do the HET according to order of preference (slower ships before faster ships, etc.). Andromedans get an exception, they can declare an HET at the point of use and don't lose the energy (it plugs a loophole with Andies losing too much energy by declaring lots of HETs and not using them).

HET assumption
I assume that if you paid for it and don't use it, it doesn't count as your one allowed time. Am I correct?
Re: HET assumption
Correct, you lose the energy but not the freebie risk free HET.VulcanDropout wrote:I assume that if you paid for it and don't use it, it doesn't count as your one allowed time. Am I correct?

In an unexpected development, the Eric Phillips vs Chandler Archibald match ended up being played rather than ending in a forefeiture. Eric won the match. I have updated the Round 1 results below to reflect this development. We are still waiting on Patrick and Krellex. I plan on sending out the next round matchups by no later than this Sunday evening.
All players must complete Round 1 by this Thursday, July 28th.
Please remember that the Turn Limit is now 10 turns rather than 6 turns.

Turn one, Jim's Orion photons were loaded, and he doubled his engines, going 16+1.
I pre-loaded my photons and overload them, so I went 8.
At turn 1.7, we were range 8 apart, and I honestly didn't expect an attack until range 5. He declared an EM on all his ships, so I fired two phasers from each ship to his BR, since that's all the power I had available.
Then he struck back with everything on my NCC. He missed with about half the photons, but it was still enough to gut my NCC. With no power blocks left, my 3 remaining +8 photons were worthless once the turn ended, and with two NCLs against a BR, two CR, and a DR, I knew there was no way I was going to pull that off...

Mojo,
I am just making some comments here to clarify rules, not tactical choices.
1. Your description of your photon status cannot be right. If you pre-load you have standard photons. You cannot then overload them until you either fire or until the end of turn is reached.
2. Your description of his fire and your fire makes it sound like you both announced fire simultaneously and that you were surprised to find he was firing everything at your CC. In Fed Com, once he announces his fire, you are free to respond to it with additional fire of your own, so knowing he was going to gut your CC, you could choose to fire everything from that CC (and/or any of your other ships) immediately in response.
Again, if I misinterpreted what you said and these were just tactical choices, please ignore the above.

Can't check at the moment, but I think that you can put the overload energy in at the start of the second arming turn. So if you pre-arm, you are on the second turn and can overload during EA.The_Rock wrote:1. Your description of your photon status cannot be right. If you pre-load you have standard photons. There is little point that I can think of to doing that (save the energy and dump it at the end of the turn if you still have it), but I seem to remember that you can do it never the less.
