The Transmission From Beyond...
What do you think the mysterios coded Air Force tapes that are the basis for the SFU (and TOS to a lesser extent) actually were?
They were actual transmissions received by hte Air Foirce in 1968. Haven;t you watched the StarTrek episode:
Assignment: Earth?
That exactly what happened according to the episode.
The big "E" went back to 1968... got invovled in all sorts of derring do...
Radio signals / computer tranmissions were made between the big "E" and the Air Force...
Things were resolved...
The big "E" returned to its proper timeframe...
and the Air Force hired an outside consulting agency to translate the massive amounts of data now stored in its computer banks.
I could tell you more, but then I'd have to kill you.

I don't get the point. In what context is your question being asked?
I mean, obviously, the real (as in "what happened in reality") story is that someone (probably Franz Joseph) made it all up in his imagination so he could have a nice back story. And since no one with a real attachment reality is gonna assume anything else, I am not seeing where you are coming from.
Are you looking for what would be the coolest explanation? I mean picking the most popular one and making a History Channel show around it would be fun.

@Scoutdad: Yes, I've seen that episode. Before you kill me, may I have the satisfaction of watching Jean whack you with her frying pan again?
@Mjwest: I'm looking for what happened in reality. Are you suggesting that Franz Joseph recorded his universe on Air Force tapes, waited till the tapes were declassified, and then bought his own idea from the Air Force???

No, I am saying there are no real "Air Force tapes". They are imaginary and part of the fictional background. The "Air Force tapes" are part of the SFU, not the "real life universe". The "Air Force tapes" are as much a part of reality as is Gary Seven.
You're just messing with me, right?

I think the "Air Force Tapes" are the garbled data transmissions of someone here on the boards trying to download and store all of the archived information of the SFU and a power surge in the computers, caused by the climatic events on 12-21-12, sent all the data streaming back thru time to 1968.... Possibly an over-worked librarian that had a bad Griswold day

<snicker> Not Griswolding anyone today ... not yet.
Tapes? What tapes? I will only confirm that there are boxes in my guarded, climate-controlled storage unit that no one has handled but me ... except the ones labeled O.R. that the Steves shoved around with 10-foot poles.
