I agree.
I hate the way Facebook is configured... but as long as you have to be on it, you may as well enjoy some miniature wargame goodness.

Just set all your profiles to friends only, and consider that everything you post is a) kept forever, and can possibly be seen by someone you might not want seeing it someday (employer forcing you to reveal your Facebook password, Facebook acct divulged during divorce/legal proceedings, etc).

Keep it fairly sanitized, avoid the apps (which can be really problematic privacy-wise), and be careful whom you befriend.

I initially used Facebook to contact some folk who would not answer emails, and to reconnect with some old acquaintances. It's not as useful as it used to be, but it still does have it's uses.
