Federation Rescue/Hospital Cruiser USS Hope

Post by Jim Lewis »

Here's my Starline 2400-based kitbash USS Hope, NCC-H235. I created my own decals for name and registry, with striping and smaller details from Starfighter Decals sheets. I got inspiration from the Starship Schematic Database and John Payne Models, with some detail and configuration changes of my own.

Very cool!

And an interesting concept...
Is this an existing ship in SFB/FC or your own creation?
If existing, can you give a reference to where the SSD/rules were published?
If it's your own, how do you envision this fulfilling its role in a game? For that matter, what exactly is its role?

If i remember right one of the sister ships to the titanic was converted into a hospital ship for WWI. So its not uncommon to have real large hospital ships. The medical bays require a great deal of space.

Seeing how the two current USN Hospital ships are converted Supertankers ummm yeah.

Does't change the fact that in FC it is just a larger unarmed target. Still a cool ship.

As far as I know, this is not an official ADB (SFB or FC) design. I got inspiration to kit bash my version from drawings posted at the Starship Schematic Database. I just changed a few details and modified the configuration.

I imagine only a small number (3 to 5 perhaps) of the Hope-Class Cruisers in the Fleet, serving as Rescue and mass-casualty Hospital Ships, built to take advantage of starship components already found in Fleet Shipyards. With this class of starship, it has a capability to detach the Medical Hull to remain in orbit around a world requiring relief efforts. USS Hope could accompany different types (configurations) of Medical Containers into hostile zones and provide defense against other empire's ships or the occasional belligerent Space Amoeba.

What I modeled is a Medical Hull with two warp engines to give it the capability of independent operation and boosted shielding. I didn't arm the Medical Hull, however. I imagine that in the event of hostilities, USS Hope would disengage from the Medical Hull, and the Medical Hull itself had enough power to shield itself from attack long enough to evacuate personnel and then warp out of the combat zone. I originally began modeling a single-engine equipped Medical Hull to meet a less critical emergency, and be able to train it with another Medical Hull a la Fleet Tug practice, but haven't finished it yet.

I upgraded the drawing's primary hull (for both USS Hope and soon to be finished USS Consolation) to the Dreadnought Cruiser's thinking them to be fitted with larger and more extensive medical bays internally in the event that the armed component of USS Hope had to be used as a lifeboat in an emergency.

Sorry if I'm rambling on, it's fun working on a mini like this...

Olympic wasn't it, hit a mine and went down even faster than the Titanic ---

Twas the 3rd ship, the HMS Britanic that was converted to a Hospital Ship. She is the one that went down to a mine on 21 November 1916.

HMS Olympic spent time in WWI as a Troopship, but survived the war and remained in passenger service until 1935 when she was retired and then broken up for scrap.
