Proposed orion phaser g rules change

Post by ncrcalamine »

This could be implimented in the 7th edition of the rule book.

Rule 5L1a 4th paragraph(stacked ses) change the word phaser-1 to photon.

Reason orions are very powerful. I just beat the 2011 origins championship fleet with my 2011 origions orion fleet. (i could not play for the championship because of other commitments at origins). On many ships substituting a " wing" phaser-1 with a phaser-g gives many of the orion ships an extra heavy weapon. By making this change you eliminate the optional wing gattling on ships with many weapons mounts and allow it on ships with 3 or fewer weapons mounts.

Thoughts

The text of 5L1a 4th paragraph would be

Any mount that can hold a photon can have a phaser-G, but no ship can have more than one phaser-G.

Sorry i ommited this from the first post

A phaser G is incredibly versatile, incredibly powerful at close range, and an all around nasty thing to be up against, that being said, your proposal doesn't fit with the setting. The limiting factor on heavy weapons is the Spaceframe (I.e. look at fast ships where heavy weapons are removed a phaser ones added). If a P-G was equivelant to a photon why couldn't federation escort frigates be re-purposed as photon frigates and have the phaser G's turned into photons?

I chose the word photon because i scanned the orion ships and thier heavyweapons mounts. it was the easiest fix ( a one word change) to get the desired result of removing one heavy weapon ie the phaser g from the wing mounts on the ships with three or more heavy weapon mounts. it was simple and concise wording to get the desired result , ie depower the Orions some what. It has nothing to do with the internal shipnarchitecture. however looking at ship architecture just look at the fed escorts which replace photons with phaser g's i believe.

Just about every Fed Escort replaces the side phaser-1s with gatlings and photons with drones.

The proposal doesn't seem to reduce gatlings in a pirate fleet just limit what mount they can fit in. If you want a fix you really need to use a limit like Web Casters or PPDs but, I am not sure they are that over powered.

this proposal was to reduce the amount of heavy weapons, not specifically gatlings. The gatlings are a heavy weapon that currently can fit into a lesser weapons optional slot, this would make them replace another heavy weapon.

Phaser Gs are not a heavy weapon.

They are not a heavy weapon, but in close have the punch of a overloaded photon that can be fired every turn for 1 energy. I am trying to lower the power of a Orion fleet by making them use aheavy weapon optional mount rather than a drone optional mount.

Well I think you would have to prove that getting one phaser G is overpowered. I don't think you will be able to do that.

Do you mean you beat the the fleet and the player who actually won the 2011 origins tourney, or just the fleet but played by some other random bod?

I thnk she is saying that getting a ph-g plus the heavy weapons is overpowered, not the ph-g in and of itself.

I played the player who played the fleet.
It really was not close, when we called the game
Two destroyed orions one undamage br one damaged ship with about 10 internals
New command cruiser destroyed, new heavy cruiser destroyed, new heavy cruiser with about 10 boxes left ( kzinti)
