5th vs current rules revision

A friend of mine has a copy with the 5th rules revision, and I am wondering what has changed between that and the current version. Are there major changes? Are the ships cards the same?

The differences are relatively minor, mostly just clarifications. I am sure the edits were published in a Communique.

The ship cards are unchanged.

I'm just curious, is it best to jump on the current version when you're just getting into the game or is it better to familiarize yourself with past versions first?

If you have the choice, use the latest rules. If you have older rules, just use them. They will be close enough.

The game has not changed that much. Regardless of the rules used, you are learning the same game. Also, there is no real rules history there, so there is no need to have the various versions. The latest are all that is needed.

Short version: Use what you have. Get the latest when convenient for you.
