Truncated Messages / Smart Quotes

Post by mjwest »

For whatever reason, this forum software doesn't handle smart quotes very well at all. Basically, if a post contains a smart quote, the forum will stop at the smart quote, discard the quote and discard everything after the smart quote. So, when posting on this forum, it is important to not use smart quotes.

For clarity, non-smart quotes are simply vertical (like 'this'). Smart quotes will "curve" towards the word it is next to so that it has differentiation between the 'start' and 'end' words. (Can't give an example of these here.) Also, I know this happens with smart quotes. It could happen with other smart punctuation, like smart hyphens (the dash '-' character), too.

Do note that if you cut-n-paste from a rich text editor like Word, the same issue will occur. To avoid this, either use a simple editor like Notepad to compose the message, or make sure when you paste, you use the "paste as plain text" or "paste with no formatting" option.

If you are posting from an i-device (iPhone or iPad), go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard and look for "Smart Punctuation". Make sure it is turned off. This does mean you lose smart quotes everywhere, but you can now use proper quotes without truncating your message.

For Chrome, I didn't find anything simple. There are apparently Chrome apps for this purpose, but nothing built in.
