Oops typing faster than I'm thinking apparently. The Klingons targeted a Hydran Cuirasier.

So it sounds to me as if the Hydrans did their job in the greater scheme of things...

Hydrans - Sacrificial trash cans for the greater good.
Yes they did exactly what they should have done... it was just one of the bloodiest games of Federation and Empire I've ever been involved in. Since everyone knew it was a one-off convention only game, no one was bothering to think long-term - it was just kill or be killed. By the end of the convention, the Lyrans had less than 80 ship equivalents, total! and the Hydrans had only 40 or so... including Stingers on the hybrid ships. The Klingons were in the 100 -120 ship equivalent range, and so on. And this was on turn 6 on a combined General War / Demon of the East Wind scenario. I wasn't paying close attention to the Eastern front, but I seem to recall the Gorn being reduced to less than 20 ships... all in the shipyard hex and the Romulans sitting at about 40 - 50 ships.

The oft repeated invective became the running gag for the whole weekend and it just sort of stuck.
