Timing your decelerations

Post by Kang »

Hopefully one for the next Communique?

If you decelerate during an impulse and your opponent does not, it means that, all other things being equal, you will lose the initiative for the rest of the impulse.

For that reason, if you are planning on using a deceleration during an impulse, it's best to use it on the last sub-pulse of the impulse so that your initiative is not affected for longer than is necessary.

That's all well and fine,

but there are situations where your maneuvering requires you to decel on the first sub-pulse or your tactical plan/defensive move won't work (maybe putting you in a worse situation than losing initiative)

Indeed there are. In that case, I should perhaps have phrased it 'if possible, use it on the last sub-pulse of the impulse...'
