Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc. will be hosting its first on-line charity tournament (for Star Fleet Battles, using SFBOL) this October. It will be known as FIGHT FOR A CURE. All entry fees ($10 per person) will be sent to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Sign-ups for the event began on 11 October, and will continue through October 20th.The entry fee is paid via the shopping cart; donations to FIGHT FOR THE CURE can be made there as well without playing in the event. http://store.starfleetstore.com/merchan ... de=charity

The Tournament Format will be the usual single-elimination tree, but those eliminated will automatically re-enter (no additional fee) as long as first-round seats are available. This will be a sanctioned rated ace tournament. ADB Inc. will provide a prize of $50 in merchandise credit for the winner. All players and donors will receive an honor bar on their page of the Wall of Honor. Additionally, Dale McKee, the noted artist and contest-winning painter of minis, will be donating a painted mini to be awarded to the winner of the tournament. To commemorate the event, the mini will be of the winning ship.

This is the perfect chance to brush up your SFB skills and do something good. If you don't want to join SFBOL, then fly the Klingon or Federation tournament cruiser. Let's make this a huge success.

Strictly an FC or F&E player? Are RPGs your "thing"? Then please donate.

Why did we choose this cause? Most people know someone who has had breast cancer, someone who had a breast cancer scare as I did last year, or known someone who dreaded getting the test each year. That knowledge makes this fight personal.

And here, in the county where I live, 12,000 women should get mammograms and do not. For many, it is a matter of poverty. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has as one of its two missions to help women afford to be tested. When I was having the diagnostic tests done, the technicians told me about women who came in with lumps the size of a fist or with open sores where the cancer had eaten through to the skin. Those women didn't have the knowledge base to realize they had cancer. The second mission of the Nation Breast Cancer Foundation is to educate people about this disease so that it is detected early when it is most treatable and the survival rate is high.

You folks are great people and I know you will make this campaign a success. Now, let's all Fight For a Cure!

Ok, some questions have come up regarding playing and donations and gifts. I talked to Leanna and here's what goes.

Let's say that you have $50 that you want to spend on the tournament. You alone want to play. That would be 1 entry and 4 $10 donations.

Let's make it more interesting. Your best friend is having a birthday and you think this would make a grand gift. You would place your friend's name in the "ship to name" and use the special instructions to tell Leanna that this is a gift entry for the person.

Let's add a final twist. You want to keep your friend wondering about just who gave him the gift. Use the special instructions to tell Leanna that the gift is "anonymous" and we'll contact your friend for you.

Does that help answer any questions?

11:59 pm tonight (Texas time) is the deadline for entering the Fight For A Cure tournament. The entry fee is only $10 and all of it goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. You get the joy of helping a good organization, playing at least a couple of battles, and maybe getting a rated ace card. Top prize is $50 in store credit and a mini painted by Dale McKee. The more, the merrier for the tournament!

Please contribute to the success of the first annual Fight For A Cure tournament and be a part of helping others.

I called SVC at home tonight and we agree that there's too many folks saying they never got the email about the tournament to call the sign ups at midnight tonight. The deadline is extended until Wednesday at 11:59 pm assuming another email goes out on Monday. If it doesn't, then we'll make it at least 48 hours after the email does go out. We're up to 30 people, but please get the word out!

Question: Will donations still be accepted after the tourney signups are finished?

No; not a SFBer, not yet. But I might want to donate.

Pinecone, we're talking about leaving the link for donations up until at least the start of the month.

The cart will do something weird and charge you for shipping, but Leanna will take it off before it gets processed. That's because we can't add money to an order (and inevitably if there is a no shipping option, someone will choose it and mess up their order), but we can always subtract from it.

Don't forget that donors will get an honor bar added to their plaque for participating in this charity event.

There may have been some confusion in an email that was sent out about the deadline for the Fight For A Cure tournament stating the deadline was Friday October 28. (Of course 10/28 is Thursday.) Because we want no one to be accidentally left out, we are extending the deadline to FRIDAY October 29 at 11:59 pm.
