Are these available through stores? Or are they a direct-order exclusive. My friend and I were interested in one or more of them but when he asked the store they weren't aware of it and I thought I saw in another post that it was available only from the adb shopping cart or whatnot but I wasn't sure.

For all practical matters, no, they're not available to stores.
For that to happen, you'd take the stock number to the store, who would then call the wholesaler and ask for a special order of that stock number. The wholesaler would be about 97% likely to say "we don't want to be bothered" and refuse to order it from us. If by dumb luck the wholesaler was in a holiday mood and agreed to do it, they'd have to set up a computer file for it, then (if they remember) add it to a future restock and get one copy from us, which your store (if they remember) could then order. The store and the wholesaler just aren't going to bother because the administrative cost would exceed the profit.
Now, if your store is in a holiday mood they could in theory call us up and order $95 worth of stuff (including the books) and pay the discounted amount ($50+$10 shipping) to us by credit card and we'd ship the box straight to them. (We can't give the store credit because it's just not worth the expense and time to set up an account and we've had stores refuse to pay.)
