Neutral Zones

Post by gurps_gm »

Clarification: The neutral zones on the map in GPD are the result of ISC intervention, right?
Are the pre-General War neutral zones between the Feds, Klingons and Romulans 500 parsecs across? If not, what is the approximate separation width?

I am not sure which map you are looking at, but the hexes on most standard maps are 500 parsecs. The pre-general war neutral zones were one hex, the post-general war ISC ones were up to five hexes. It's kinda vague if the entire 500 parsec distance is neutral zone or if that's just a map convention, but the starship moves at the speed of the plot.

I am thinking of creating a smaller map of the Klingon-Federation border. That's why I a looking for an actual width of that neutral zone. If there isn't anything out there, I will do my own assumptions.

Thanks for your help.

I would just go with 500pc. Avoids problems. The SFO map (not yet published) is five 100pc hexes.

I'd be inclined to do something like a 100 parsec wide border zone with 100 parsec wide limited-patrols-allowed zones on either side, for a total of 300 parsecs, with another 100 parsecs of no-build zone, to cover the 500 parsecs per F&E hex.

At Warp 9+, it still takes a full day to cross 500 parsecs.

I have used the mega-hex that Jeffro posted a few years back. I am considering the placement of worlds, nebulae, and what-not such that they aren't piled up in one spot.

By worlds etc, I mean new stuff I create for my game. My players are going to do some patrolling with exploration on the side.
