Painting Details on Fed minis

Post by Jiraiya1969 »

Need some advice on a couple of things.

- When painting the end caps of the nacelles a darker color than the nacelle proper, what is a good.way to keep that line even, as there is no mold to separate the cap from the nacelle? I have done the best I can on this DN I am painting, but they are still uneven :(

- Painting the black ring around the nacelle, just behind the front of it (the dome, boussard collector, whatever you call it).

- Making the shield grid on the primary hull stand out.

Thanks for any advice.

Everyone will have their favorite method, but here is what I do:
1) End cap at rear of nacelle. I use A pewter Grey paint thinned to abouthte consistency of milk (using distilled water) and a sable, script brush. The script brush has long (~ 1/2 bristles). With this and thinned paint - I can easily paint a smooth, straight line around 1/2 of the nacelle. Then turn it over and repeat. After that, it's a simple matter to paint the rear prtion of the nacelle pewter grey.

2) Black ring behind the front dome. This is as easy as the rear cap. Use the same method, only in black not grey and then paint the entire dome black as well. Once the black is dry, usethe same process to paint the front of the dome white... leaving a thin black ring. With practice, you can make this ring very thin. Then paint over the white in the color of your choice. I use orenge with a red wash and yellow high-lights.

3) Shield grids. I've tried this on several ships and have not been satissfied enough with the results to continue - so those minis were stripped and repainted. Several of the master painters that frequent this board will give you suggestions for sucessfully painting shield grids.

I hope this helps.
