Gorn EY troop ships

Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Battles: New Product Development: Module Y4 (the new one): Gorn EY troop ships

Posted this in the Y2 topic, but I decided to also post it over here, to get more feedback.

Propose that the Gorns used a modified WBB/WCA as a ground assault ship; able to land (once) on a planet as Fed commando CL.

Would probably lose all the torps/missile lauchers, and some of the phasers/lasers. Would have some cargo for tanks and such, and barracks, obviously.

That's the vanilla proposal. Here's the cool one.

Use the standard Gorn troop transport pod, adapted for EY. It's basically a NTW ship, anyway. Standard pod showed up in Y130, so there was probably an EY version..I hope...:)

Gorn operational doctrine is that it flies along with the W-series ships and lands on the enemy planet(oid) after the defenses are broken; if time is of the essence, its towed to its target by a suitable warship and released near the planet to commence landing operations.

When the Gorns build their YTG in Y98, they make sure it can carry the troop pod (or convert the existing pods and build the new ones to fit).

I just like the idea of Gorn flying saucers....;)

Don't flood the thread all at once, yo.

It may just be me, but I was under the impression that Early Years ships tended to be stardard classes (like Cruisers, destroyers and frigates) with relatively few specialty classes of aux warships available until after the Four Powers War.

During the Early years (and even during the early middle years) the races were still building up their fleets to strength in the basic classes of ships... so withdrawing a WBB or a WCA from "general service" to be used as a specialty variant (such as ground assault ship) might be a bit of a reach.

Is there any SFH that supports the existance of early Gorn Troop ships? off hand, I cant think of any... but I might be mistaken?!?

We DO need EY Commando Ships; I am just not sure if the above is the right solution.

Is there a mini of an EY Gorn? Does it look remotely aerodynamic, such that a variant would be able to land? If not, the saucer above is plausible. It could arguably be a detachable front saucer of a standard Gorn ship.

It seems a bit daft to make a specialty ship that can't do its mission (land on a planet) more than once without major work, so a proper lander makes sense. After all, the Warbird and so on can land, so I can imagine the Gorns copying the idea. It requires many design compromises, so as soon as they invent GAS and decent transporters, the Gorns design all their ships to stay in space.

I wanted something more than the usual 'converted W-series/Y-series ship'.

Since the Gorns (and most everybody else) is going to get tugs in Y2, and troop transport pods (except the Feds. Their troops ride in style...), and the Gorn standard troop pod is, in effect, an NTW 'sublight' starship, I think it would be pretty neat if it turned out the Gorn 'troop pod' was just a slightly modified version of their sublight commando SHIP....
