Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Battles: SFB General Discussions: Archive through May 30, 2021
By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - 04:20 pm: Edit

Hello all! I am considering running an SFB tournament in January 2022 at the Las Vegas Open, The LVO is the flagship event of Frontline Gaming, which runs several Warhammer (40K and Age of Sigmar) events, and the largest of these are developing into full conventions supporting a wide array of miniatures games and others. LVO 2021 was cancelled due to COVID, but 2020 had roughly 2,500 attendes as I recall, with over 800 playing in the main 40K event.

They are moving to a new venue with 2022, the Rio, with lots of space, so fitting this in size wise won't be an issue. What I wan testing here is to see if this is something that might attract enough SFB players to hit Rated Ace status (and make it worth doing). It's three plus days in Las Vegas, with a chance to play in-person competitive SFB to boot!

I just checked with FLG and it's close enough to event submission deadline, so I've submitted and this is on it's way to becoming official. Once I have their approval and finalize entry fees and such, I'll post all the details in the Conventions topic!

It will be the last weekend of January 2022, Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th.

Hi Alex,

The gaming page states the convention was cancelled due to Covid (https://lasvegasopen.squarespace.com/gwevents)

Has that changed?

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Saturday, May 22, 2021 - 12:39 pm: Edit

Ken, it still has some of the old 2021 info up - 2022 is confirmed for January 28-31st at the Rio.

Is there a consolidated Master Ship Chart for ships published in Captains Log? Or even just a master index?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Thursday, May 27, 2021 - 06:25 pm: Edit

In this corner of the ADB website, there is a link to an index of all articles from Captain's Log #18 onwards. It usually gets updated as and when each new issue of Captain's Log is published.

Gary, thank you for that pointer! Unfortunately that doesn't help much since it's just the table of contents page from each, which doesn't list the ships included. Nevermind, found the actual index - that is really tucked away!

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, May 28, 2021 - 12:09 am: Edit

Really tucked away? It's the first item on the list of links.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Friday, May 28, 2021 - 12:33 am: Edit

It may just be how I process things when scanning quickly - first time I looked at the page I saw the solid section of hyperlinks all to specific numbered Captain's Logs didn't even register that one line was different. With that in mind, really tucked away is somewhat an exaggeration. But it wouldn't hurt to make that one link stand out more, either.

And to be clear, I love the wealth of info available on the website, thank you very much for that! I just get lost sometimes.

Another route is the Master StarShip books. Admittedly, it's not as fast as a simple index, but I've found it useful since I started collecting the MSSBs.

(shameless plug shameless plug shameless plug... :))

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Friday, May 28, 2021 - 01:48 pm: Edit

Jeff, no need to plug them, I have them all! And they are handy, but what I was looking for was a concise listing (which Gary helpfully directed me to).

By Zac Belado (Pixelgeek) on Friday, May 28, 2021 - 02:29 pm: Edit

I really like the MSSBs but they do need indexes.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Friday, May 28, 2021 - 02:35 pm: Edit

I've been considering making my own detailed ToC for them.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, May 28, 2021 - 03:15 pm: Edit

What would you imagine an index to include?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - 10:38 am: Edit

A list of the ships with their rule numbers is one thing. Page numbers is a bit harder. Every mention of the word disruptor gets a bit sticky.

By Zac Belado (Pixelgeek) on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - 11:22 am: Edit

Just an index of what page the ship entry appears on.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - 12:25 pm: Edit

For me, page numbers would just be a bonus. A list of ships by rule number would be a helpful navigational aid. It's not too hard to go "Oh, I'm looking for ship (R3.109)" and jump to somewhere in the ships section, see that I'm at say (R3.80) and company, and jump forward a few pages until I get to it. Knowing that the Klingon area control ship is the D7U and (R3.109) in the first place is the catch!

Hrm, another personal project for me: alternate ToC's that list ships by hull type similar to F&E SITs ("What are all the available Kzinti CL variants?") and by variant ("I'm gonna need a commando ship, what are my options?"). But that's entirely a me idea.

By Zac Belado (Pixelgeek) on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - 12:26 pm: Edit

Ships by hull type would be really useful as well

By Zac Belado (Pixelgeek) on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - 02:08 pm: Edit

Alex, I sent you a FB message about this

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - 02:42 pm: Edit

While awkward, you could use the spreadsheet in G3 as the index to the MSSB.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Sunday, May 30, 2021 - 08:22 pm: Edit

SVC, spreadsheet? I take it you mean the MSC, which we could, which would be sorting by hull type (and certainly a good start). A live spreadsheet of the MSC we could sort and filter would be a dream come true!

Zac, I'll follow up there in a bit.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, May 30, 2021 - 09:35 pm: Edit

No one offered a live spreadsheet.

By Patrick H. Dillman (Patrick) on Sunday, May 30, 2021 - 10:15 pm: Edit

We could crowed source one using Google Sheets.

By Zac Belado (Pixelgeek) on Sunday, May 30, 2021 - 10:26 pm: Edit

That is actually what I wanted to chat to Alex aboyt
