Wooohooo! Tholian Ship Card Pack #1 is now up on e23!

http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB4810

Six ships for the Tholians, those mysterious extra-galactic xenophobes who hate pretty much everybody. Includes six ships:

* Dreadnought
* Heavy Cruiser
* Command Cruiser
* War Cruiser
* Destroyer
* Patrol Corvette

Enjoy!

(Take a look at today's picture on our page on Facebook to see what the Seltorians think!)

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Sunday, December 19, 2010 - 10:38 am: Edit

The Tholian pack is fairly unique in that it contains three bonus ships, plus a ship card only available in Booster 92 (or Briefing #1). (The PC is the PCW variant.) As a result, getting this Tholian pack, in conjunction with Tholian Attack, will give a fairly complete Tholian fleet without having to find ships scattered about else where.

This is an extremely nice set of ships for Tholiophiles.

I'm not sure where to put this in the Nominations folders, but I would like to see Briefing# 1 on e23. Or just the scenarios from it (I think most of the other stuff is outdated by now). Having an electronic copy of the scenarios would be great! Thanks,

Garrett

Are the color ship cards from Captain's Log available via e23? I know the Supplemental files are available via e23 (usually with additional ships), but what about the ships in the actual issue itself? Thanks,

Garrett

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, February 21, 2011 - 05:46 pm: Edit

The ship cards that were in Captain's Log are being added to the various packs on e23. Not all of them have been added yet. As we don't want to put the same ships in multiple packs and have people complaining that "I bought Klingon Pack #1 and got ships I already bought in Captain's Log Pack #4" they are being put into "empire" packs as we move along.

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Thursday, March 10, 2011 - 02:02 pm: Edit

On the Orion ship card pack, I want to note that the CR, LR, and SAL were the first three Orion ship cards published, and they were definitely showing their age. They have been completely updated to reflect all of the new rules and additions added to the game since then.

Minor spelling glitch in product description for Andromedan Pack #1.

Reads "...Memba Cobra, ..."

Which should be "Mamba, Cobra," that is, change "e" in "Memba" to "a", and add comma after word.

Terry, thanks! I've sent it to Leanna.

As you can tell, the Andromedans have arrived on e23!

Is there some reason why the Orion Ship pack downloads as a zip file and the others download as PDFs?

No idea. We did not upload it that way.

Fast cruiser and BCH.

Mike, I think it depends on the file size, but that's an SJG decision on how to do it. One of the GURPS books I downloaded was a zip file and it opened just fine on my Xoom (and is very readable and I love it!).

The ISC keeps the peace with an attitude! Many people who know me call me the "ISC Queen" from my time playing the ISC in Galactic Conquest. I'm tickled to announce the release of ISC Ship Card Pack #1. These are the ships that you need to play a basic ISC squadron. All you need is an FC Reference Rulebook and you are ready to go!

http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB4816

Ships include:
Dreadnought
Star Cruiser
Light Cruiser
Destroyer
Frigate
Command Cruiser

Plus an exciting three-player scenario with the ISC separating Federation and Klingon ships along with full-color graphics for the ISC counters in half-inch, one-inch, and two-inch scales. This pack, like all Federation Commander Ship Card Packs, is presented in High Resolution.

I hope you enjoy it! -- The ISC Queen

The LDR Ship Card Pack #1 for Federation Commander is now up on e23. To me, this is a very special pack as it is the first one specifically for the LDR. They aren't just a footnote on the Lyran cards; they have their very own with their unique weapons.

This includes high resolution PDFs for the:

Military Police Frigate
War Destroyer
War Cruiser
Heavy Battlecruiser
Command Cruiser
Small Auxiliary Cruiser

Scenario 8CM55 Battle of the Rift

I would like to request epacks of FC ship cards that have appeared in Communique or CL that are not in color yet.

Will Briefing #3 get some love after Federation Admiral is is released? Wasn't that the one with FC ship cards needed to play Federation Admiral?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 12:02 pm: Edit

Way back when the original idea was for Briefing #3 to provide the ships that would be useful to Fed Admiral (commando, cargo, scout) but things change.

1. Briefing #2 didn't work the way we wanted in the market.

2. We've already published any and every ship that might have been in Briefing #3 in Captain's Log, Transports Attacked, and Communique.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 01:18 pm: Edit

Jean and I are looking into the idea of Epacks from CapLog and Communique. They're easy to do except for the counters, but I might have just thought of a way to make those easier.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 02:46 pm: Edit

I just finished creating a master FC Epack counter format file, the "way to make those easier" I mentioned above.

It took an hour and a half, but I'll get that back every time I create new counters for a new epack. I can now just go get the blank format I need (unless it's an entirely new base hull) and it's little more than paste and edit.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 02:56 pm: Edit

Two things about "I would like to request epacks of FC ship cards that have appeared in Communique or CL that are not in color yet."

1. I have long thought that each pack had to include a new ship, but those aren't THAT hard to do, but doing one takes an hour or two and there are only so many SVC hours. Jean says she's come to believe that more people hate us for forcing them to buy the pack to get one new ship than love us for giving them a pack with a new ship. So if I don't have to create a new ship I can just take the first six cards for that empire that I come across in the file. THOUGHTS?

2. Jean wants to release one new pack per month. Taking a quick scan of the file I have, well, it's hard to tell, maybe ten packs ready to go. I am not sure that I want to wait 10 months for them to start earning. Jean says that to release two at once means each will sell 2/3 as much. THOUGHTS?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 03:28 pm: Edit

It might be an option to divide up the various Communiqué and Captain's Log Ship Cards into different categories, in terms of how (or where) it may be best to handle them.

-----

For the first example, I'd refer to the Romulan DemonHawk dreadnought, offered as a Ship Card in Captain's Log #49. Since there have been ePacks done for Eagles and Kestrels already, perhaps a Hawk-series ePack could have the DMH shuffled in to it.

Or, since there in fact two Kestrel ePacks, would there be enough Hawk-series Ship Cards in FC to warrant offering the Condor in one, and the DemonHawk in another?

-----

For the second example, there is the Klingon D7E survey cruiser in Communiqué #45. There are already three Klingon ePacks uploaded, but this ship is a "mission variant" which would be useful in Federation Admiral. Would it be better to put it in a fourth Kingon ePack, or offer it in a dedicated ePack for survey cruisers instead?

Speaking of survey ships, the Romulan SparrowHawk-C from Commuiqué #40 - which would also be useful in Fed Admiral terms - could go into one of the Hawk series ePacks noted above.

-----

For the third example, there are the various mobile carriers offered in recent issues of Communiqué. Since they are still playtest ships - and ones which are set to go onto the Borders of Madness at any rate - perhaps it may be better not to put them into a "regular" ePack, but rather into a playtest pack akin to those already available for Omega and the LMC.

Unless it would be better to work up a carrier playtest pack with a range of strike carriers on offer instead - in which case, the mobile carriers could be offered as an additional playtest pack, or perhaps sat on until the time comes for carriers to be formally published for BoM.

-----

And there are also a number of Ship Cards for empires or settings currently in playtest.

As noted over in the FC: Lost Empires thread, a "Lost Empires Playtest Pack" (again following the Omega or LMC model) might be the best way to move those factions forward.

However, in the case of the two LMC Ship Cards in CL49 (the Baduvai Strike Cruiser and the Maghadim Battlecruiser), I'm not sure if it would be worth offering them individually for people to playtest (here, perhaps), or to wait until a future decision can be made as to where - if anywhere - the LMC Magellanic project ought to go from here.

For what it's worth, a number of the Omega Ship Cards previewed in Captain's Log or Communiqué are posted here as it stands.

By Sean Johnson (Seanxor) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 03:42 pm: Edit

In regards to #1. The only epacks I have bought are the ones that contain ships only available in Captain Log or Communiques (as well as the online only ones like the Frax). While I can see why some people might want an epack that repackages ships available as laminated cards, I did not. I did find it kind of annoying that if I wanted a color version of all ships I needed to buy an epack of ships I already had to get the one I did not.

In regards to #2. I think Jean is probably right. Unless both packs were something I really wanted, I would probably just get one if two came out at the same time.

I do like the idea of having a regular time that an e-pack is released. It would be cool if I knew that on then 12th of the month or whatever there were new ships waiting for me to download. I do not know if sites like wargamevault have a subscription service, but if I knew I was guaranteed an epack once a month I would be willing to pay that up front, subscribe, and see what Federation Commander goodness arrives for me to download each month.

By Art Trotman (Drneuro) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 05:05 pm: Edit

I totally understand where you guys are coming from but I look at the fact that the epacks only cost $5, so I am happy to get one or two new ships in an epack, along with the larger format ship cards of ships that I already had. In life, we often have to sacrifice to get what we really want. It is impossible to please everyone but having really nice color ship cards of ships from communique, and Captain's Log, plus one new ship(a conversion from SFB that would not be sold in any upcoming products, like a KB10R for example) would probably come close. -:)

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 05:59 pm: Edit

My primary reason for purchasing e-packs so far has been to get color versions of the Captain's Log and Communique ships and/or ships only available by e-pack (I don't think there have been many, if any - tugs maybe).

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 07:02 pm: Edit

I am more or less totally committed to single-empire packs and won't be doing a dedicated pack of survey cruisers. That said, I just today did the Lost Empires e-pack with the four ships from CL48 and two new ones. It has 3 carnies and 3 paries but the preview packs for Early Years and Magellanics were done as multi-empire packs, so that's an obvious exception.

I solved the problem of the counters; doing the new ones for Lost Empires (even being a new empire) was much easier.

My current theory is to:
1. Allow Jean her theory of one pack per month.
2. Go through the CL/Comm ships once a month and if I find six from one empire bundle them up and do them as a pack and send them to Jean.
3. Any time I need to do ships for Communique I'm going to look for an empire with five ships waiting and do one for them, then do their pack and send it to Jean.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 09:06 pm: Edit

Thank you for the update concerning the Carnivons and Paravians.

When it comes to ePacks, I noted that aside from the Romulan example noted earlier, there seem to be other Alpha Octant empires which have been set up according to a particular series, or heavy weapon type. The current Tholian ePack has all Archeo hulls; the Hydran ePack has all fusion variants; while the current Lyran ePack has all catamaran hulls; and so on.

Were there plans to eventually do Neo, hellbore, and trimaran ePacks respectively; and, if so, might those ePacks allow for a few of the Captain's Log or Communiqué hulls to be added to the mix?

Say, in the case of the Neos: there are five "single-sized" Neo-Tholian Ship Cards in print. If including the "double-sized" NBB Ship Card was a problem, perhaps a new "mission variant" Neo could be added with Fed Admiral in mind - such as the "campaign conjectural" NSR or NTG from SFB Module R9.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 12, 2016 - 11:03 pm: Edit

I can mix ships from any one empire any way, by whim or by whatever comes to hand. Let us not rigidly plan one path.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 01:04 pm: Edit

Sean, for folks who buy through DTRPG or Wargame Vault, I always send a message to anyone who has bought a Federation Commander title to let them know there's a new item available. (I do the same for the other lines, too.)

I cannot do that for SJG -- we lost the ability when e23 got moved into Warehouse 23.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 01:52 pm: Edit

In a more specific answer to Gary's question:

"Were there plans to eventually do Neo, hellbore, and trimaran ePacks respectively; and, if so, might those ePacks allow for a few of the Captain's Log or Communiqué hulls to be added to the mix?"

We live and we learn as we listen to customers. Being more open and transparent than any other game company I am honored to show you the decision process.

Back when the situation was "The current Tholian ePack has all Archeo hulls; the Hydran ePack has all fusion variants; while the current Lyran ePack has all catamaran hulls; and so on." We did indeed plan to have "Neo, hellbore, and trimaran ePacks" in the next round. (Each round was one pack for each empire.) The dumbest thing we could do, however, was to pursue a plan that the market (you guys) didn't like. Some of you wanted your own printable version of laminated cards; some did not. The only way to answer that "want" was to put the laminated cards into separate packs and the color versions of log/comm cards into different packs. So whatever the original plan was, it was overridden by the need to separate the cards that existed as laminated packs and the cards that did not.

And no, we're not going to change the existing packs because that would just confuse people. We've been through this sort of thing enough to know that this is not a path to follow for that way madness lies.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 02:51 pm: Edit

I might comment that it would be incredibly easy to do ePacks of things that exist as laminated cards for those who want to print their own. However, history shows that such packs don't sell very well so without a specific request I will focus on the comm/log cards.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 03:07 pm: Edit

Thank you for the further clarification.

I should note that I was mistaken earlier. It turns out that there is a sixth "single-sized" laminated Neo: the "collared" DNH, from Booster Pack #16.

But, as you say, the point is moot if ePacks of laminated Ship Cards are less of a priority.

In any event, I look forward to seeing where the ePack line goes next.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 04:19 pm: Edit

Well, next will be the Lost Empires preview pack.

After that, it will be the first empire in the file with six unpublished cards, probably Feds.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 04:40 pm: Edit

Checking....

Andros I have three finished cards and three unfinished cards that I might finish sometime but need too much work for me to finish this cycle. Still, when looking for something to do, finishing those Andro cards might be fun.

Baduvai: one card, probably needs to go into a future mixed-empire omega pack.

Borak: I have the four cards from CL51. If I did two more (not that hard to do, perhaps) we could do a Borak playtest pack. But not now.

Generals: I have a bunch of cards, some of them the backside of cards done laminated, some of them never published (skiff, courier), some of them auxiliaries. Technically I can probably find six printable cards.

Feds: DE, DN+, half of the DNK, DWE, HDW, HDW2, NCJ, NCT, NSC, OCA, plasma frigate, Fralli CA. Pick any six, or remind me that we did publish some of these somewhere as laminated cards or ePacks.

Gorns: four ships, not enough.

Hydran: Templar, Chyenne, Baron, DWE, DWL, Lord Admiral; plausible pack.

ISC: battle tug, blockade runner, CLF, commando CL, DDE, DDL, DDS, Early DN (used in epack?), HSC, LBT.

That's enough for now. Other duties call.
