New empire, new ship

I wonder if it might be worth taking a look at how the turrets of Worb Technocracy ships are handled on Shapeways, in terms of how one might approach the issue of turrets on Borak ships. For example, the product page for the 3125 scale Worb heavy cruiser shows both how the miniature is presented as ordered, as well as how the turrets are intended to be placed when the mini is being used. (Note that the sockets for the Worb turrets are hexagonal, so that the turrets can be placed at their proper 60-degree angles.)

Way cool

Yeah, the turret design is probably the least-finalized thing about this one. I have to go back over the line-art with a magnifying glass.

Regarding Turrets: Those of us using these for ACtA will need different angles, so please don't use hexagonal sockets.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 07:07 am: Edit

What angles do you need? If it's just 0/90/180/270, then 12-sided sockets would work. If you also need 45/135/225/315, then it'd have to be 24-sided sockets. The other option would be to offer the mini in two versions with either six or eight sided sockets.

I don’t know that the printer technology can handle 12 teeth. Might be easier to just do a round peg.

By Jean Sexton Beddow (Jsexton) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 10:16 am: Edit

Gack -- small teeth won't print worth a flip, even if the sculptor can get the wall thickness checker to agree. And it would limit it to Fine Detail Plastic if it did. I'd go with round for this, I think.

By David Bostwick (Zarquon) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 11:39 am: Edit

I like round, it just avoids any issues with angles. Also, I really want it to work in fusion plastic.

Square hole with 6 SFB turrets and 8 ACTA turrets.

By Steven Zamboni (Szamboni) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 12:49 pm: Edit

If you really want to get fancy, make it round with a keyhole flange so the turret can spin but won't come out of the hole unless it's in the right spot.

If this was Detail only, we could print captive spinning turrets directly into the model. (No multi-part surcharge on Detail plastics.)

Round peg & socket is doable unless SVC tells me otherwise.

By A David Merritt (Adm) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 04:13 pm: Edit

That would likely be best for ACTA players, and SFB/FC players who do not use a grid to play on.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 04:26 pm: Edit

If you're going with round, maybe you can you put six or twelve tick marks around the edge to help line it up, if it's really that important for players.

Now, if we had a diagonal four-sided peg on the turret, a larger hexagonal six-sided socket on the ship, and a little hexagonal piece that fit in the hole with a diamond shape hole that would fit the turret peg in it ...

By David Bostwick (Zarquon) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 04:32 pm: Edit

...or maybe just a round hole and a round peg.

By MarkSHoyle (Bolo) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 04:54 pm: Edit

If you do a star or hexagonal flange...
Wouldn't you only need a "Knife Edge" blade on the turret...

Round hole and square peg (and a hammer) for those who just want to be different.

By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 08:02 pm: Edit

> Round hole and square peg (and a hammer) for those who just want to be different.

I am sorely tempted to just go with this.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 08:44 pm: Edit

Or if that won't work, perhaps a SQUARE hole and a ROUND peg.

By David Bostwick (Zarquon) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 09:20 pm: Edit

Are both ships in the same scale? The Borak seems really large compared to the Fed.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 09:49 pm: Edit

I suspect the Borak ship has less volume than the Fed CA. If I recall, they tended to be smaller class per class than most empire's classes.

By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Thursday, June 18, 2020 - 11:06 pm: Edit

As currently scaled, the Fed CA is about 28% larger than the Borak model in actual volume.

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Friday, June 19, 2020 - 08:09 pm: Edit

Nope, hex peg and a hex hole so the turrets are accurately placed ... (g)

By Mark Hutton (Trynda1701) on Saturday, June 20, 2020 - 02:29 pm: Edit

I'm not up on the details of the Borak.

Are these turrets to go on the wings? Looking at an image of the Borak Star League Playtest Prototype book, there are two raised rhomboid shaped structures between the phasers and the central hull that aren't currently on the render. Are those the turrets?
