Supplement or Standalone Product?

Post by Stan Shinn »

Is the vision that in the final product, these books will be supplements that require the MgT Core Rulebook in order to play?

Or is it that the Prime Directive rules will have the needed MgT mechanics described within the Prime Directive core rulebook, so that it is a standalone game that is compatible with MgT Traveller?

Knowing the final vision might help us playtesters give better feedback.

Right now you need to have the MGT Core Rulebook.

The focus right now is getting out the material needed to role-play in the SFU (Prime Directive) using the MGT2 core system.

Traveller has always been "System and Setting married at the hip" meaning they each drive elements of the other. There is the "Traveller System" and the "Third Imperium" as a setting brought together as the "Traveller RPG".

This is the same as our d20 and d20M versions of PD - we presented our setting using the mechanics of these systems, modifying the systems to fit how our setting works. The same here with MGT2 - Their mechanics adapted for role-playing in our setting.

I hope that is a little more clear than 'Mississippi mud'

Yeah, it will all be one lovely book.

For *now* though you need either of the MGT2 core rulebooks until we have finished TPD.

Yep. I have both the first (print/PDF) and newer 2022 (PDF) version.
Thank you for confirming

I also want to chime in how amazing it is that you include "Background on the SFB Universe." Even if players are familiar with TOS, TNG, etc... this does a GREAT job of explaining that this book is NOT a Star Trek RPG, but there are some commonalities that help players understand some basic world concepts: Federations, starship technology, etc. That said, while this is the SFU as designed by ADB, I think this book will also be attractive to players who want to use the rules and setting to venture off into their own version of Trek because the other existing games have become very, very bloated or take forever to get because they come from afar. Just thinking of other selling points for the game to generate sales. :)

as the game continues to playtest, I can say I'm truly glad this will include the basic rules for Traveller, much like GPD has the basic Gurps rules. Even with the recent release of the FREE basic rules, I think it's still great to introduce the game into one book and then build from there...
